Gokokuji Temple

"This temple is located on Naminoue-dori Avenue in Wakasa, Naha City. Constructed in 1368, it is Okinawa's oldest temple and still exists today. The Shokanzeon bodhisattva-a work said to be from the Kamakura period-is venerated as the main deity. Adjacent to the grounds there stands a memorial tower ""Kozakura no To"" for the schoolchildren who were sacrificed with the evacuation vessel ""Tsushimamaru,"" which was sunk by the American army in 1944."

波上宮のすぐ隣にあります。ぱっと見の外観はそれなりに近代的でそんなに特徴ないですが、沖縄に現存する一番古い寺院らしいです。現状では檀家さん向けなかんじであまり観光客にとって見どころ感はあまりない感じです。

波上宮の隣にある沖縄で最も古いと言われる真言宗の寺院。山号を波上山と言うように、波上宮と一体だったと思われる。波上宮よりも参拝者は少ないようだが、沖縄で寺社仏閣を詣でるならば参詣しておきたいお寺のひとつ。

那覇の波上宮の隣に立つ真言宗のお寺護国寺。本尊は聖観音菩薩を祀っています。由緒あるお寺のようですが、一般にも本堂を開放する地方のお寺らしい配慮もあります。流石にインバウンドも少なく落ち着いた佇まいでほっとする空間です。
