Miyakojima City Traditional Crafts Center

Reference/Local/Exhibition/Literature Museum
This handicrafts shop is located about a 10-minute drive southeast from Miyako Airport. It sells kimono and other dry goods made with Miyako Jofu, a local textile with a history dating back some six centuries that has been designated by the national government as a Traditional Craft Product. The shop also sells accessories made from local textiles including Miyako Asaori and Miyako-ori that make great souvenirs. Visitors can view exhibits including the raw materials and implements used to create these textiles. It is even possible to watch live weaving demonstrations on weekdays. Groups of 40 or more people should call before visiting. A video on the weaving process can be viewed weekends and holidays when there are no live demonstrations.
