Omi Shimoda-yaki Tobo
"A one-minute walk from the Iwanehigashiguchi bus stop on the Community Bus leaving from Mikumo Station on the JR Kusatsu Line. This pottery studio has been in business since around 1750 and is the only pottery studio to have passed down the techniques of Omi Shimoda-yaki pottery in an unbroken line. Designated a Traditional Craft by Shiga Prefecture, Shimoda-yaki is characterized by its simple designs and use of a deep blue hue called ""Gosu."" Newness and novelty resides in the traditional, charming simplicity of Shimoda-yaki, and Shimoda-yaki plates, teacups, bowls, and other tableware is perfect not only for everyday use but also for entertaining guests and for giving as gifts and souvenirs. The studio also offers teacup and plate painting activities and pottery making activities as well. Both types of activities require a reservation made at least two weeks in advance."
