This museum is on the Matsugaoka Kaikon area, a nationally designated Historic Site in Matsugaoka, Haguro Town Tsuruoka City. It uses a rebuilt Edo period silkworm house, and offers exhibits related to the history of reclamation work done by former samurai of the Shonai domain after the Meiji restoration. The building's second floor also exhibits a 25,000 piece collection of folk toys. There are a variety of other facilities here, including the Shonai Rice-growing Implement Warehouse, which displays tools used in the nationally designated Tangible Folk Cultural Assets Shonai Rice-growing Implements, as well as the Shonai Eigamura Film Museum.

明治初期に庄内藩士が養蚕を営むために開墾した？その養蚕施設らしいです。余り内部は詳しく見ませんでしたが、西郷隆盛と鶴岡の関わり等の展示を見学し、名物？の麦きりを頂きました。

明治初期に戊辰戦争で新政府軍と最後まで戦い敗れた庄内藩士が、養蚕のために開墾した松ヶ岡地区にある当時建てられた養蚕用の建物を利用した施設です。開墾の様子や当時の養蚕についての歴史的資料が展示されています。建物自体の機能美も見どころです。２階に展示されている郷土玩具のコレクションも開墾とは無関係ですが、その量と質に圧倒されます。
