Mt. Iwatsuno

Temple
This is a branch temple of Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, the main temple of Tendai Buddhism. Its formal name is Waden-san Joko-in Gankaku-ji Temple, but for a long time, it has been referred to affectionately as Mt. Iwatsuno. It was founded in 851 by Jikaku Daishi, third leader of the Tendai sect, during the reign of Emperor Montoku, the 55th emperor of Japan. In 1955, Fukushima Prefecture designated its statues of the god Bishamonten and his attendants, Kichijotennyo and Zennishidoji, as Prefectural Important Cultural Properties, and the entire mountain was designated as a Scenic and National Monument.
