"This Shinto shrine is dedicated to late Edo period Confucian scholar Gamo Kunpei. The shrine's grounds sprawl north of the Tochigi Prefecture Government Building, and monuments commemorating Gamo Kunpei's achievements and his posthumous conferral of rank, as well as a seated statue of the scholar can be found inside their bounds. Gamo Kunpei is believed to be a descendent of Aizu Domain lord Gamo Ujisato and wrote the ""Sanryoshi,"" which recorded his research into imperial tombs across the country. Gamo Kunpei was famously the first person to use the term ""keyhole-shaped tumulus."" Each year in April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the shrine holds a ritual children's sumo tournament; meanwhile, in August on the night of the 15th day of the eight-lunar month, the shrine holds a moon-viewing event."

「寛政の三奇人」の一人と言われる蒲生君平命と祭神とすると神社です。前方後円墳という言葉は蒲生君平が初めて使ったものです。栃木県庁を少し奥に行ったとことにあります。緑が繁る丘のうえにあります。
学問の神様

県立図書館の横の道を北上すると石段が見え、上ると蒲生神社があります。江戸時代の三大奇人の一人蒲生君平を祀った神社で学問の神様です。初代横綱の明石内蔵助の像がります。昔は八幡山公園に降りる所に大きな滑り台がありました。

由緒書きによると、宇都宮出身で幼き頃より学業に励みし江戸後期の学者・蒲生君平を奉るために昭和初めに創建された神社で、八幡山公園の近くに鎮座しています。祭神は先生と呼ばれ、命日が例祭となるなど、なんだか人間味を感じる神様です。由緒書きは所々薄れていてよく読み取れませんが、宇都宮城主から会津に転封となった蒲生氏とも関係があるようなないような？！こちらの蒲生氏は、歴代天皇の御陵を調べ、著書「山陵志...
