Agatsuma Gorge

Valley
A 3.5 kilometer long gorge extending from the Gangasawa Bridge spanning the Agatsuma River to the Yanba Bridge. Created by the waters of the river eroding lava spewed by an ancient volcano, this beautiful gorge is referred to as the “Yaba Gorge of Kanto,” a reference to another beautiful gorge. Hiking in the area is particularly recommended around mid-April when the Rhododendron dilatatums come into bloom, in May when the new green of spring emerges, and from late October to early November when the fall foliage is at its best. The sightseeing trail starting at Shishitobi Bridge takes about 25 minutes to walk one way; some of the trail’s many highlights include overhanging cliffs, curious rock formations, waterfalls, and a viewing platform offering a sweeping view of the gorge.
