Shimantoya
This souvenir shop is on the bank of the Shimanto River in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture and contains a restaurant on the second floor. It opened in 1967. The first floor sells processed goods such as natural eel, shrimp, sweetfish, and seaweed from the Shimanto River, which is said to be Japan’s last remaining limpid river. The chef, who is also a river fisherman, offers dishes such as grilled eel and rice, natural salt-grilled sweetfish, fried river shrimp, and other local cuisine. Depending on the season, you may be able to sit outside on the terrace and gaze at the river while you eat.

- wild eel
- I came here to try their wild eel. It was okay, the meat of wild eel is leaner than those of farmed eel. The wild eel came at a price JPY3,980 but it was worth a try nonetheless.
