Kawaraburo (Riverbed Bath)

This free, mixed open-air bath is located in Misasa Onsen in Misasa Town, Tohaku County, Tottori Prefecture. At the approach to the Misasa Bridge that leads to the center of the hot spring town is a staircase, and there’s a stone bath and foot bath erected on the riverbed. It is known throughout the world for its 24-hour radium spring situated amidst the rich rustic landscape. While there are a simple dressing room and barrier on-site, it is in full view of passerby, so women and tourists often use it at night. Bathing suits are not allowed. Depending on the day, the bath may be closed from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. for cleaning.
