Mitate-jinja Shrine

Shrine
A Shinto shrine standing in lush Mitate Park a five minute walk from Saijo Station. A Gion shrine was built in the area dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-mikoto, worshipped for providing healing from illness, when a plague was sweeping the land in 706. Thereafter, through merging with other nearby shrines, Mitate-jinja Shrine was ultimately moved here. There is a “Matsuo-jinja Shrine” on the shrines grounds whose enshrined deity was ritually divided from the one in Matsuo-jinja Shrine in Kyoto; the shrine is renowned for the blessings it is believed to provide in matters relating to sake. Mitate-jinja Shrine front shrine contains numerous sake casks donated to the shrine by local sake makers.
