Wajima Asaichi
Located in Kawaimachi, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, this is one of the largest morning markets in Japan and contains between 100 and 250 different stalls. It is said to have a history over 1,000 years old, and many of the sellers and customers are women. You’ll find fresh fish sold by women in the fishing village, locally raised vegetables, handicrafts sold by women of the neighborhood farmhouses, and more, and the energetic sale cries echo throughout the market. The morning market is open from 8 a.m. to noon and is closed for the first three days of the New Year as well as the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month.

- bad vibes
- the shopkeepers tend to be pushy (not something that is common in Japan); didn’t like the atmosphere. A lot of the urushi goods are not authentic Wajima-made but imported from China.

- Visited on a cold and rainy morning so perhaps not the ideal time to go
- We stopped at the morning market on a recent trip to the Noto Peninsula and Wajima. The day was rainy, windy and quite cold. My sense was that many of the stalls did not open because of the weather...
