Kangaku-no-Sato Shitada Roadside Station
Located in Niwazuki, Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, this roadside station is built close to Yagigahana, a well-known scenic spot. The large building with red roof is hard to miss. The farmer’s market inside sells local fruits and vegetables, other food stuff, and souvenirs etc. The farm restaurant, where you can enjoy local dishes made with local ingredients, handmade soba noodles, and an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet (weekends only), is very popular. You can also visit the birthplace and memorial museum of Tetsuji Morohashi who compiled Dai Kanwa jiten (The Great Chinese-Japanese Dictionary). There is an admission fee for entry into the museum’s exhibition room.
