Toba Sea-Folk Museum
You’ll find this museum in Uramura Town, Toba City, Mie Prefecture. It collects, stores, and exhibits materials that focus on people’s relationship with the sea. You’ll find over 60,000 items that cover everything from ships to woman divers, fishing gear, and documents related to fishing methods. 6,879 of these items have been designated National Important Tangible Cultural Properties. The repository that houses 80 wooden boats is especially amazing. It was designed by Hiroshi Naito and won the Prize of AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan), and it was chosen as one of the Top 100 Public Building Designs as well. The facility offers crafting experiences, wildlife observation, and a range of other activities.
