Handa Waterway & Warehouses

Street
There remain numerous historical buildings in an area of warehouses enclosed in black wooden walls along the Handa Waterway in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture. The area prospered in the Edo period with shipping and brewing industries such as sake and vinegar, and even today some of the warehouses along the canal are still in use. There is a strong smell of vinegar in the air which is why the place has been named as one of the 100 most fragrant landscapes in the country. Nearby is the Mizkan Museum, where you can learn about Mizkan’s way of producing vinegar, and the Handa Red Brick Building, where Kabuto beer was produced and now one of the nation's Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.
