Nobori-gama (Climbing Kiln)

Historical Monument
This is one of six of Japan’s oldest nobori-gama (climbing kilns) famously know as a “Tokoname kiln” in Tokoname, Aichi. It was first built around 1887. This kiln boasts the largest scale among remaining climbing kilns in Japan and was used as recently as 1974. It is an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. It has eight burning chambers built on sloping ground and is characterized by its 10 chimneys reaching up towards the sky. The interior of the kiln is open to the public. There is also an adjacent Exhibition Studio where you can view items related to Tokoname ware and participate in painting workshops.
