Toshijima Island

Island
This is the largest of the outlying islands of Toba City, and a popular activity is walking tours that take visitors around historic sites such as the kubizuka (a burial mound for a severed head) and dozuka (a mound for the severed torso) of Yoshitaka Kuki, the lord of Toba Castle who committed seppuku (suicide by ritual disembowelment to avoid a disgraceful execution) after suffering defeat in the Battle of Sekigahara, as well as offering a view of the work in the fishing port. There are also many other sites to see such as the original tree cultivar for Yamato Tachibana (a type of citrus tachibana), which is a prefectural Natural Monument, and a beech tree that looks just like a dragon. Every year on the old calendar the Hachiman Festival is held from January 17-19, and the Oiyare-fune at the end of August is also interesting to see.
