Old Amagi Tunnel
Located in the Yugashima district of Shizuoka Prefecture’s Izu City, this is Japan’s first and still existing stone roadway tunnel that is also the longest with a length of 445.5 meters. As a famous tunnel that appeared in the Yasunari Kawabata novel Izu-no-Odoriko (The Dancing Girl of Izu) and the Seicho Matsumoto novel Amagi Goe (Amagi-Pass), it supported the lives of the locals from 1905 until 1970 when the New Amagi Tunnel was completed. The surrounding area is enveloped in virgin forest, and the interior of the tunnel is cool even during summer. Many tourists visit the tunnel during the day.
