Uroko-no-ie / Uroko Museum

Historical Monument
Located in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, Uroko-no-ie was the first Ijinkan (former residences of early foreign settlers) building to be opened to the public and has been designated as a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. It was built in the settlement as a leased house for foreigners in 1885, and was later moved to its current location. It is called “House of the Scales” because the outer walls are covered with natural slate making it look like fish scales. The building holds a collection of antique furniture which gives a sense of history, as well as works of art, including famous Meissen porcelain and Western paintings. The view from the third floor overlooking the city of Kobe is also a must see.
