The lighthouse was designed in 1876 as the first large lighthouse on the Sea of Japan side, and the view from the top of the narrow spiral staircase is spectacular, almost tropical. Many tourists enjoy driving along the Kakunoshima Ohashi Bridge with this lighthouse as their destination.

角島に渡ってそのまま一気に島の西の端までやってきました。そこに立っているのが角島灯台です。明治９年につくられたという角島灯台は、高さがおよそ３０ｍもあります。その高い灯台のすぐ横に、角島灯台記念館がありました。この灯台記念館は、職員の宿舎だった施設で、館内には、角島の歴史や日本各地にある灯台が紹介されており、また、灯台長の部屋なども復元されて見学することができました。

角島の西の端に建つ真っ白い角島灯台。この灯台は明治９年に灯がともされたという、日本海側で最も古い西洋式の灯台です。この灯台の横に、記念館が建っていました。この記念館は、かつて灯台守の宿舎として使われていた建物なんだそうです。角島灯台の歴史はもちろん、角島についての展示もありました。
