A historic Shinto shrine believed to have been founded in 876. Dedicated to Susanoo no Mikoto, the shrine is said to provide protection from calamity and safe travels. The Awata Matsuri festival held each October is comprised of the Oide Matsuri held two days before Sports Day, the Yowatari ceremony held the day before, the Shinkosai festival and Kankosai festival held the day of, and the Reidaisai festival held on the 15th.

京の粟田口に鎮座

京都トレイルで将軍塚から粟田神社に下りてきました。旧東海道に面した急な石段を上ると平安神宮の大鳥居が見渡せる小高い山肌に鎮座。訪れる人も少ない静かな神社でした。京の七口の一つ粟田口にあり京を旅立つ人々が旅の安全を祈願しました。アヒルを浮かべた手水鉢が出迎えてくれる境内にはスサノオノミコトを主祭神に御本殿や稲荷神社、出世恵美須神社や祭り関係の小さな宝物殿も。
★膝笑う長き石段下り終えかえり見すれば紅葉燃え立つ

南禅寺から円山公園に行く途中、ちょっと立ち寄りました。長い石段が堪えました。境内はひっそりとしていて、今年の紅葉は見栄えがあまりよくなかったです。1月の「出世えびす祭」や6月の「茅の輪くぐり」に訪れたことがあります。「粟田山荘」で食事した帰りにも参詣したことがありますが、その「粟田山荘」は今年6月で営業を終了しました。残念です。
