Former Residence of Natsume Soseki (Oe)

The former residence of author Natsume Soseki is located next to the Janes Residence on the grounds of the Kumamoto Yogakko School. This is the third house that Soseki lived in while in Kumamoto, and it was moved from the former village of Oe to its current location. It is said to be the departure point for the journey described in his book Grass Pillow (Kusa-makura).

水前寺成趣園の東隣なんですが・・・

広くて美しい水前寺成趣園を中央の池の周りを時計回りに一周しました。次に向かったのが、夏目漱石大江旧居です。その場所は水前寺成趣園のすぐ東隣なんですが、不規則に交わっている狭い道が続く住宅街にあったので、見つけるのにちょっと手間取りました。板張りの外壁の、いかにも明治の建物でした。内部も見学ができました。畳敷きの和室がいくつかあって、広さも十分な間取りでした。

広い水前寺成趣園の東側に、こちらの古い建物、夏目漱石大江旧居がありました＞この建物を見学するまで、私は、夏目漱石が熊本に住んだことがあることを知りませんでした。漱石は、４年３か月の熊本生活の間に６か所の家に住んだそうです。この旧居はその中のひとつで、もともと大江村にあったものを、現在の場所に移築復元したものです。板張りの外観の家は、畳敷きの部屋がいくつかある、割と広い家でした。

文豪、夏目漱石の旧居です。現在、無料で開放しています。内部は掛け軸や夏目漱石に関するパネル等が展示されています。コロナの関係で、手指消毒、検温、氏名、連絡先の記入があります。水前寺成趣園からも近いので、ぜひ立ち寄られることをお勧めします。行き方はちょうど複雑でわかりにくいのですが、成趣園の東側沿いに進むと見えてきます。常に成趣園の柵を左手に見ながら進む感じです。
