Wakamiya Inari-jinja Shrine

Shrine
Wakamiya Inari-jinja Shrine is known as the “old shrine of Wakamiya.” Its origin is said to be when the deity of Kusunoki Masashige, the harvest god “Inari” in the Nanboku-cho period, was enshrined in its current location in 1673. It is famous as a place where many patriots came to visit in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate, including Sakamoto Ryoma. During the grand festival held on the 14 and 15 of October, young men wearing masks of white foxes perform acrobatics unassisted atop 10-meter-tall bamboo in a show known as “Takengei” (bamboo performance).
