天草の北の端にある大矢野島の有明海を見渡すことができる高台に、天草四郎ミュージアムがありました。ヤシの木が生えている緑の高台に、淡い黄色の教会のような建物が印象的でした。ミュージアムの名前が示すとおり、島原の乱を起こした当時16歳の少年、天草四郎を中心に、島原の乱の歴史的背景と、南蛮文化の影響を受けた当時の模様を伝える資料館です。映像によって解説されていて、よりわかりやすかったです。

私にとって天草四郎は、島原の乱を起こした人、その指導者というイメージの人でした。天草四郎ミュージアムは、天草の玄関口である大矢野島の中央部の海が一望できる高台にありました。今回初めて天草を訪れてみましたが、天草のあちらこちらにはこのミュージアムをはじめ、彼の像があるなど、地域挙げて彼をたたえている感じが伝わりました。天草の人たちにとっては、一種のヒーローなんだと思いました。
