This is an over 50-year old Chinese restaurant popular with the local residents, tucked away inside the Miyako-dori shopping arcade. The interior, with both counter and table seating, is punctuated by the dynamic wok cooking sounds, adding to the local color. Keien is popular with people of a wide range of ages, because it offers a myriad of dishes from Chinese ramen and gyoza pockets to other rice dishes including pork katsudon. The soul-food of the Otaru residents is the Ankake Yakisoba fried noodles, an original pioneered by Keien. The chewy noodles, wafting of sesame oil are smothered with vegetables.

ツアーで小樽へ行った時に、ガイドさんから小樽市民のソールフードはあんかけ焼そばと聞き、ネットでお勧め店わ探して、草分けの店との桂苑へ食べに行ってみました。アーケードの都通りの中にある中華店でした。あんかけ焼そばに餃子を頼みました。野菜が豊富なあんのかかった焼きそばの麺はパリッと表面が焼けていて、好きな歯ごたえでした。小樽では海産物料理に目が行きますが、あんかけ焼そばは隠れたお勧めメニューです。

名物のあんかけ焼きそば820円。麺がいい感じに焦がしてあって普通に美味しい。但し、小樽でしか食べられない特別さはありません。各地にある街の美味しい中華屋さんですね。
