They say that Ushikubi-tsumugi weaving began with mechanical weaving techniques passed down by the wife and daughters of a certain Oohata who was a Genji fugitive and flowed to Ushikubi Village after his defeat by Heike in the Heiji rebellion of 1159. Here, you can learn about the historical sericulture and textile arts of the Shiramine area, from silk reeling, reclamation, and refining. They also offer reservation-only activities like hataori weaving and making silk cocoon dolls.

蚕が２匹入っている繭のことを[玉繭]といい、少し大きめのそれから繭糸を挽き出す作業を見られます。目を凝らしていたら、女性の職人さんから「ご説明しましょうか？」と。お気づかいがうれしかったですね。湯釜の中に繭がぷかぷかと浮いていたり、なにしろ初めて見聞きすることばかり、面白かったです。牛首紬の名前は、ここ白峰の旧地名、牛首村から来ているそうです。
機織り体験ができます

牛首紬の工房の見学と、機織り体験ができます。体験は500円で15分ほど指導を受けながら機織り機を動かせます。特に女性にオススメです。普段はあまり見られないのでいい経験でした。
