"To reach this observatory, visitors should drive about 20 minutes from the Kunohe Interchange on the Hachinohe Expressway and follow the road inside the Ono Campus north for 1. 2 kilometers. Located on top of a peak with a clear view, Hirono Makiba Observatory was named ""the best place in Japan for viewing the stars"" in 2007. It is equipped with the largest telescope in northern Tohoku (51-centimeterdiameter reflecting telescope [IK-51NC]), as well as an H specialized solar observation telescope. It has a number of permanent and special exhibits, and visitors can view some of the finest selected astronomical photographs."
