Yakushima Island

Island
This island located south of Cape Sata in Osumi Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the island is mountainous and has a rich and beautiful natural environment. The island and Shirakami Mountains were officially registered as Japan's first World Natural Heritage sites in 1993. Various scenic Yakushima destinations include: the Jomon Sugi cedar, estimated to be between 2170 and 7200 years old; Oko Waterfall, chosen as one of the 100 elections of the waterfall in Japan; Nagata Inakahama Beach, a breeding ground for loggerhead turtles; and Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen that can only be bathed in for two hours during low tide.
