Futtsu Memorial Hall of Land Reclamation

Memorial Hall
This museum is on Futtsu Port's Shintomi Canal. The distinctive spherical structure on the roof over the entryway was inspired by the gun battery which protected Cape Futtsu during the Edo period (1603--1868). The sea around Futtsu used to be a shallow and rich fishing ground, but it was eventually filled in to create the area you see today. This memorial passes on the history of the area's fishing traditions prior to the landfill for future generations. Exhibits include fishing equipment and video that depicts how the area used to be, letting you see how much it's changed.
