Yamatane Museum of Art
This art museum which opened in 1966 in the Hiroo district of Tokyo’s Shibuya City is dedicated to collecting and displaying nihonga (Japanese paintings). Primarily featuring a collection of nihonga which were collected by the founder of Yamatane Securities, Yamazaki Taneji, it counts approximately 1,800 works of modern and contemporary nihonga. With six works that are Important Cultural Properties including Gyoshu Hayami’s “Dancing in the Flames” and “Camellia Petals Scattering,” the museum features the works of important painters in the history of nihonga. Instead of regular exhibitions, the museum holds exhibitions several times in the year. The wagashi (Japanese sweets) and original merchandise in the museum shop based on motifs of the museum works are popular.
