Yusuhara Hachimangu Shrine
A Shinto shrine located in Kamiyahata, Oita City. A deity was ceremonially transferred here from Usa Jingu Shrine in 827, after which this shrine became the most important in the ancient Bungo Province. The grounds are home to a giant camphor tree said to be over 3,000 years old and which has been designated a National Natural Monument. The shrine’s Nandaimon (the Great South Gate), rebuilt in 1866, is covered with stunning carvings. The gate is also known as Higurashimon, which means a gate from sunrise to sundown, implying that one never gets tired of contemplating it.
