Ikeshima Coal Mine

The site of a former coal mine located in Ikeshima-machi, Nagasaki City. This mine on Ikeshima Island supported Japan's modernization via the coal industry for some 50 years until its closure in 2001, and the island was known as the last coal mine island in Kyushu. Today, the mine facilities are used as a tourism resource, and tours are held which allow participants to ride a mine car and view the mine's tunnels.
