Kinzan Shussekiji Temple

This ancient temple was founded in 718 A.D. and is No. 7 of the 20 Shikoku Bekkaku temples on pilgrimage rote; together with the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, these two pilgrimages make up the pilgrimage which help pilgrims get rid of 108 kleshas (In Buddhism, people are said to have 108 earthly desires). Located atop Mt. Izushi in Setonaikai National Park, the temple name is affixed to the mountain name, leading to it being called the Kinzan Shussekiji Temple. On clear days you can look out from the main hall past Cape Sada, as far as Oita Prefecture, and even see Mt. Ishizuchi and the Shikoku Mountains. During the early morning in the fall and winter, there are days when you can watch the sun ascend from a sea of clouds.

アクセスも大変な別格霊場でした

ここは１３００年の縁起を有する別格霊場第７番札所です。珍しく事後に大師が巡錫したと云う部分以外は空海の「色」が薄い寺院です。その意味では異色で良い寺院です。本堂も独特の様式で変わった、印象深い建物です。道教法師が開かれた真言宗御室派の千手観音を本尊とする歴史ある遍路寺でした。寺の格としてはたった半世紀そこそこの歴史しかない別格霊場に組み込まれているのは気の毒とさえ感じた。
静謐な境内と絶景の見晴らし

久し振りに訪れた境内は来訪者も少なく、とても静かな雰囲気でした。以前は檜皮葺の屋根だったように記憶しておりますが、現在は銅板に吹き替えられていました。山門に続く石段の脇にはあじさいが植えられており、季節外れの花が一輪だけ咲いていました。梅雨の時期には美しい花々が楽しめると思われます。境内や、少し下ったところにある駐車場付近からの展望は最高で、四国山脈の山々や、伊予灘や瀬戸内海の島々、そして遙か遠方...
