Daisetsuzan National Park
This national park in the central part of Hokkaido is Japan’s largest national park and includes mountains such as Mt. Asahidake, Mt. Kudodake and Mt. Tokachi, as well as an abundance of rare alpine flora including Oxytropis japonica var. sericea Koidz (field locoweed), avens, weaselsnout and rare alpine fauna such as Parnassius eversmanni (yellow Apollo butterfly) and arctic hare. The area bustles with many mountain climbers due to the numerous hiking spots, climbing roads, and ropeways. The Sounkyo Visitor Center located in the area offers information on the nature observation course in Daisetsuzan National Park, and also exhibits material and images on Daisetsuzan nature (available in English, Chinese, Korean, Thai).
