Samurai Residences

Other Historic Site/Building
These residences where built on the west side of Shimabara Castle when Matsukura Shigemasa built the fortress. Because they mainly housed foot soldiers trained in the use of matchlock rifles, the area is also known as “Matchlock Rifle Town.” A spring used for daily needs by the street said to have once been lined with 700 residences still flows clean today, creating an elegant scene.
