Nyoirin-ji Temple

A Pure Land sect Buddhist temple built by Nichizo in the Engi period between 901 and 923. Designated an imperial temple by Emperor Go-Daigo during the Nanboku-cho period (1336-1392), Kusunoki Masashige’s eldest son Masatsura, anticipating his end in the Battle of Shijonawate, carved his death poem the doors of the main nave before departing for the front. In spring, the figure of the bodhisattva Cintamanicakra, housed in the main nave, is unveiled.

桜の山の中にあるお寺

吉野山寺宝めぐりの一つ、中千本から見ると、桜が咲く山の中にお寺があります。一度谷に降りて、向かい側の山を登って行くので、往復すると結構体力を使いますが、桜を眺めながらゆっくりと往復しました。後醍醐天皇が勅願寺とし、御陵があり、有料拝観の宝物殿には蔵王権現像や、楠木正行が辞世の句を刻んだ扉などがあり、宝物殿のテラスからは谷を見渡せます。

後醍醐天皇や楠木正行、弁内侍等南北朝時代のヒーロー、ヒロインとゆかりのお寺で、背後には京都を向いた後醍醐天皇陵「北面の御陵」(天皇陵で唯一、北向きの陵墓)があります。楠正行が辞世の句を読んだ扉等が見られる宝物殿も見応えありました。

折しもNHKBSにて太平記の再放送中ということで、南朝に関りがある如意輪寺と後醍醐天皇の御陵に来ました。ロープウェイから徒歩で来ましたので１時間以上かかったような気がします。創建は10世紀初頭、真言宗の寺院でしたが江戸時代に現在の浄土宗に変わりました。本堂はじめ静かな場所です。
