First Torii Gate
This is a vermillion-lacquered large torii (Shinto shrine archway) which stands at the entrance to the approach road to Kasuga Shrine in Nara City. It stands at a height of 6.75 meters. As a type of Kasuga-style archway (it has distinct features such as a slight curvature of the under beams and top beams and thick column diameters), it has been designated as a Japanese Important Cultural Property. Even though the archway was first built in late Heian period, the present archway was reconstructed in 1638 and a large scale restoration was done at the 60th anniversary of this reconstruction.
