Former Mekata Family Residence
The Mekata Family Residence is a mid-level samurai residence which was built in the middle of the Edo period. Iwakuni’s samurai residences were usually two-story constructions as a protection against flooding of the Nishikigawa River, and although the Mekata Family Residence is also a two-story construction, it looks as though it is a one-story house since the front has a large main roof without any windows. This style of construction is to have given consideration to avoid looking down upon the clan’s lord when he passed by. It was designated a as National Important Cultural Property in 1974.
