Hakodate Meijikan (Old Central Post Office)

Complex Facility / Commercial Facility
This building was built in 1911 to serve as the Hakodate Post Office. This archetypal red brick structure that has survived through war and fire now plays a role in telling the story of Hakodate’s history. The inside of the building has become a shopping mall, and in addition to shops carrying Hokkaido’s folk art and glassware there is also a workshop in which visitors can try sandblasting and crafting music boxes, making this a great place to search for souvenirs. It is about a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive by car from Hakodate Station.
