Ship Kobe Kaigan Building

Historical Monument
An office building standing on Kaigan-dori Street in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The building was originally constructed to serve as the Kobe branch office for Mitsui & Co. in 1918. The modern stone building was completely destroyed by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The granite outer walls were salvaged and reused for the facade of a new skyscraper built on the same spot. Accordingly, today the building has a unique design consisting of a retro stone building style base from which rise a towering glass skyscraper. The structure is still used as an office building.
