- If Kagawa is anything, it's the home of udon noodles. Your first stop is this super-popular self-service noodle shop. The thick, elastic noodles here are eaten in a soup stock of sardine and kelp that is good enough to drink on its own. There are some 50 different types of tempura to choose from, so a moment of indecisiveness is inevitable.

- Nakayama Senmaida is one of the top 100 rice terraces in Japan. The area is huge, with some 800 rice fields sloping up 120 to 250 meters above sea level. It is a scene straight out of old Japan. The best time to visit is from early summer, when the rice planting begins, to autumn, just before the harvest.

- This museum is maintained by long-established soy sauce maker Marukin. Here you can learn about the history and culture of soy sauce manufacturing that has continued unbroken in Shodoshima for more than 400 years. Marukin's premium soy sauce is naturally fermented in large wooden vats. It's also used in its ice creams, which you must try.
