Take a driving tour through the beautiful Fukui Prefecture

Fukui Prefecture is a rather overlooked, but a nonetheless fascinating pocket of Japan. Filled with fascinating history and incredible food, it’s definitely worth exploring if you have the time. Here’s a short half day or day long guide to exploring some of Fukui’s main attractions by car.

  First stop on the tour is Eihei-ji Temple. A large temple complex surrounded by lush green foliage, it’s an excellent place to get out of the car and stretch your legs. The cedar trees that populate the area in autumn turn glorious shades of red and gold. The complex is home to over 70 buildings in total, offering plenty to explore.

  Next up, it’s time for a quick lunch at Toraguchi one of Fukui’s most loved soba restaurants. The simple locally produced soba is best enjoyed with plenty of grated radish and bonito flakes.   The final stop on your tour is one of the area’s most historic and iconic sites, Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins home to the reconstructed ruins of Ichijodani Castle Town. The town was at its most politically powerful during the Muromachi Period, when the town was home to the influential Asakura Clan. Today, it’s a little piece of history frozen in time, just waiting to be explored. You can wander through the streets of Muromachi Period samurai houses, and even dress up as a samurai from this period if you so desire.
