Located in Japan’s eastern Chubu region, Ishikawa Prefecture offers sublime ocean views and stunning mountain vistas as the area is surrounded between the Sea of Japan and the cluster of peaks surrounding Mt. Hakusan. With the opening of Hokuriku Shinkansen connecting Tokyo to Kanazawa, the capital and the largest city of Ishikawa, this prefecture is more accessible than ever.

The historic cultural center of Kanazawa is sometimes called “Little Kyoto” with home to one of Japan’s best gardens, the Kenroku-en Gardens. The Kanazawa-jo castle adjacent to the garden is the city’s dignified landmark with an approach lined by sakura (cherry blossom) which is best viewed when in full bloom in spring. Beside the garden, there are unique museums like 21stCentury Museum of Contemporary Art as well as preserved traditional neighborhoods. The city marks the entrance to the Noto Peninsula where it stretches across the water giving a breathtaking coastal scenery with terraced rice fields best viewed from the winding highways that run along the peninsula’s edge.

For a mesmerizing experience out in the nature, a visit to Senmaida (1000rice fields) and Chirihama, the only beach in Japan that can be driven on by a car is a must. The rice field is best enjoyed during Senmaida Light up Festival between October to March. Make sure to take a detour to the fishing port of Wajima in the Noto Peninsula to experience some tradition of Wajima-nuri (lacquerware) and buy fresh local products including seafood at the market.

While there are a lot of snowfall during winter, it also creates an instagrammable collaboration of snow with some of the best touristy areas. And to warm up, going to an onsen(hot spring) retreat is the best way. Kaga onsen, made up made up of 4 hot springs; Yamashiro, Yamanaka, Katayamatsu, Awazu, close to the holy Mount Hakusan is a mecca for onsens on the northern coast of Japan. Because of its easy train or drive from Kanazawa, the area is very popular.
