Burger Shops in Yokohama Minatomirai

NAVITIME TRAVEL EDITOR

Yokohama, as a key port town, was historically far more cosmopolitan than capital city Tokyo, with one aspect of this being an unrivaled selection of foods imported from far-flung locales. The harbor city’s Chinatown continues to be one of its main draws, but for those craving some Western-style comfort food we recommend heading over to Yokohama’s more modern Minatomirai district. The number of hamburger joints clustered here make it a contender for the (entirely fictitious) title of ‘Burgerville Japan’, and here are five of the very best.

    Umami Burger - MMcruise

By rocking up in Japan, this LA-born upscale burger restaurant is ‘bringing it all back home’: the word ‘umami’ (which has entered the English lexicon as a way to describe a fifth taste sensation, distinct from sweet, sour, salty, or bitter) is originally a Japanese term. This rich and savory ‘fifth taste’ is at the heart of Umami Burger’s tempting concoctions, brought to the palate by ingredients including parmesan cheese, shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, and roasted tomato. This recently opened branch offers the original Umami Burger along with other favorites such as the playfully named Manly Burger (containing beer cheddar cheese and bacon lardons), and some Japan-only exclusives.

    Shake Shack - Minatomirai Square

This gourmet burger chain has come a long way from its humble origins as a Manhattan-based food cart. This is Shake Shack’s first Japanese location outside Tokyo, and though sleek in appearance the basic premise remains unchanged: to be a contemporary, ethically-sound version of an unpretentious roadside burger stand. All burgers, other than the vegetarian ’Shroom Burger, contain 100% all-natural Angus beef patties that are hormone and antibiotic-free, with buns using strictly non-GMO ingredients. Drink options include homemade lemonade, and Fiji Water from which 1% of sales profits is donated to environmental conservation projects.

    Bubby’s - Yokohama Landmark Tower

Bubby’s is an authentic All-American restaurant that was established as a pie speciality shop in NYC’s hip Tribeca district back in 1990, before growing into a much-loved eatery famed for its high quality pancakes, Eggs Benedict, and burgers. This location within Minatomirai’s Landmark Plaza was Bubby’s very first Japanese opening. When it comes to burgers, Bubby’s unabashedly embraces the bigger-is-better ethos, with its 100% beef patties weighing in at a considerable 200g. Both buns and patties are homemade, with the Bubby’s Burger (1,400 yen, served with fries) having just a few basic fillings that allow the taste of that thick, juicy patty to really come through. Bubby’s is also known for its coleslaw and lemonade (the latter served hipster-style in a mason jar), with these too being genuinely homemade. They complement the burgers perfectly.

Teddy’s Bigger Burgers - Yokohama World Porters

Hawaii’s popularity as a holiday destination with Japanese has had the welcome knock-on effect of Hawaiian-style burger joints popping up in Japan’s larger cities. Teddy’s is rated as one of the very best, both in Japan and back home in Hawaii where it first opened on the island of O’ahu. The chain has won Hawaii’s Best Burger Award for the past 17 years straight. A choice of nine signature burgers, all of which can be bolstered with extra patties and fillings, is joined by mochiko chicken, an authentic Hawaiian recipe in which tender chicken is fried with sweet rice flour and soy sauce.

Hard Rock Café - Queen's Square Yokohama

With its ubiquitous music memorabilia and a string of locations spanning the globe, this is the spot for folks who like a dose of good old-fashioned ‘rawk’ along with their authentic American burger. Located beside Minatomirai’s Landmark Tower, a giant guitar outside the premises marks the spot. Inside, after enjoying your choice of burger (eight varieties are offered, including shiitake-featuring vegetarian) you can leisurely digest it while admiring a collection of artifacts that includes pieces originally owned by Elvis and Mick Jagger. Not that this is simply a rock’n’roll museum: live music events are occasionally held here too.
