Nippondaira Hotel

Overlooking Suruga Bay, Mt. Fuji, and the spectacular Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture’s Nippondaira Hotel has been a luxury destination since its inauguration in 1964. Located in the Nihondaira plateau, this modern hotel sits in the centre of a generous expanse of manicured greenery that feels miles from civilization—though a free private shuttle keeps it easily accessible from Shizuoka Station (itself only an one-hour bullet train from Tokyo Station). The Nippondaira is a premium destination with an appropriately premium price tag, but it’s more affordable than you might imagine—and a truly decadent way to indulge.

The Nippondaira Hotel’s 80 guest rooms are spread between its third and fifth floors, and styled according to either Western or Japanese standards. A variety of room types are available depending on the number of guests in your party and required amenities, and range from an elegant standard double to more sumptuous corner suites with views of Mt. Fuji and Shizuoka city. Although rooms on the hill side of the hotel face the sprawling beauty of the Nippondaira Plateau, we recommend choosing a room on the garden side of the hotel, which will afford you incredible views of Mt. Fuji. All rooms, apart from the standard twin/double, feature panoramic floor to ceiling windows which draw the surrounding landscape into the room; a perfect frame for Mt. Fuji from dawn to dusk.

The Terrace dining area is perfect for a coffee or a meal at any time of the day, with an open kitchen. An immaculately groomed lawn spreads out from the terrace lounge, punctuated by chiseled stone works carved by renowned stone artisan and sculptor Masatoshi Izumi. Visitors are encouraged to stroll around the garden to fully appreciate the view from the Terrace, which encompasses Mt. Fuji with Shizuoka City in the foreground and the port of Shimizu to the east.

Both of the Nippondaira’s restaurants can be found on the first floor. The Western-style theTerrace restaurant offers all-day dining from 7 a.m., with a glass wall offering stunning views of Fuji and Suruga Bay below. Alternatively, Fukian’s Japanese menu features seasonal kaiseki, a traditional multi-course dinner utilizing local and seasonal ingredients, as well as a full sushi bar. After your meal, head to one of the hotel’s two lounges: the Terrace Lounge (first floor) or the Upper Lounge (sixth floor), the latter of which offers some of the hotel’s best views. If you’re looking for a quick way to satisfy your sweet tooth, visit the cake shop for deliciously affordable treats.

A secret to greet guests at the sunlight fades is the spectacular view of Mt. Fuji at night. Head to the Upper Lounge on the sixth floor from dusk to enjoy a glass of wine while drinking in the panorama, officially recognised as one of Japan’s most beautiful night views. If you’re looking to unwind, visit the Spa Pevonia Botanica on the Nippondaira’s second floor. Plant-based French beauty brand Pevonia Botanical chose the hotel as the site of its first spa in Japan, and offers a variety of single-visit and long-term treatments.

  • Make Lasting Memories

Guests visiting the hotel in July will have the perfect view of the exclusive Nihondaira Festival, at which approximately 10,000 fireworks are launched from the hotel’s grounds into the night sky. Before you leave, pick up the perfect souvenir of your stay from the Nippondaira’s gift shops, featuring locally made lacquerware, naturally dyed accessories, and premium Shizuoka green tea.
