Stay at Wabi-Sabi Retreat at Kisami Ohama Beach - Shimoda

Just a four-minute walk from picturesque Kisami Ohama Beach, on the southern coast of Shimoda, is Wabi-Sabi Retreat, a laid-back, warm, and welcoming guesthouse and one of Izu’s most idyllic accommodation options. Sitting about three hours south of Tokyo, Shimoda, with its pristine beaches and easily accessible location, is a popular place for locals and international guests year-round and especially in the sweltering summer months. Mixing modern attitudes with traditional design and a relaxed beachside atmosphere, it’s a multifaceted home away from home and the perfect place to unwind, disconnect from the world for a few days, and meet new friends along the way.

  • The guesthouse features a number of different accommodation options; however, all of the rooms here adhere to traditional Japanese-style design, with tatami flooring and futon bedding. Wabi-Sabi currently has private, self-catering rental cottages and private rooms with shared facilities. The rooms are measured in tatami mats, with an eight-tatami room accommodating up to three guests, a 10-tatami room fitting four, and a five-mat room fitting one person. Although they look traditional in style, all the rooms have been recently renovated and upgraded with understated interiors, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. Private rooms are not available for children under the age of 13, private rental cottages are available.

The heart of Wabi-Sabi is arguably its cafe and reception area. The open, light-flooded space is an excellent place for guests to unwind after a long day exploring the area’s beautiful beaches. The cafe serves up a variety of feel-good healthy dishes such as green smoothies, fruit, hearty sandwiches, and freshly ground coffee, as well as beer and wine. The space also doubles as Wabi-Sabi’s activity space, as it’s where guests can rent bikes and surfboards and quiz the expert staff for local travel advice.

There’s always something going on, so you’ll find no shortage of activities to keep you busy during your stay at Wabi-Sabi. If you want to explore the area farther out and in more depth, Wabi-Sabi and its sister guesthouse Tabi-Tabi (also in Shimoda) offer “mama-chari” (shopping bikes) for free a day.
Those interested in getting to know the local aquatic life, should ask the staff about snorkeling trips. A 40-minute bus ride from Tabi-Tabi is the coast of Nakagi, where you can take a five-minute boat ride to Hirizo, one of the area’s most beautiful snorkeling hotspots.

If you’re traveling via public transport, the closest station is Izukyu-Shimoda Station. A taxi ride from the station to Wabi-Sabi takes about 10 minutes and will cost around 2,000 yen each way. If you’d rather take the bus, they depart from stops #3 and #4 and run multiple times an hour. Get off at the Kisami stop and follow the signs to Ohama for about 10 minutes; you will see a tunnel on your right—from there, go through the tunnel, turn left, and follow the dirt road on your left. Once you get over the little bridge and up the hill, Wabi-Sabi will be the last building on your right.
