The Mind-Bending World of MORI Building Digital Art Museum

teamLab, a design, art, and technology collective founded by University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology graduate students in 2001, have pulled off stunning digital art installations around the world and this is one of their most ambitious. MORI Building Digital Art Museum: EPSON teamLab Borderless has become something of a phenomenon in Tokyo since it opened earlier this year, drawing visitors from near and far to experience a truly mind-bending romance of high-technology, design, and artistic excess.

The collective’s first permanent museum in Japan occupies a massive but unprepossessing building in Odaiba's Palette Town. AI technology, cameras, powerful computers, and 470 projectors have been harnessed to turn the interior of the space into a breathtaking interactive and immersive experience; teamLab brings together high concept artistic statements and heavy-duty tech.

The museum is permanent but houses a number of installations that will be modified or swapped out over time. One of the more impressive feats of the museum is its curators’ commitment to the theme of the borderless. In “Crows are Chased and the Chasing Crows are Destined to be Chased as Well, Floating Nest,” viewers lie on their backs or sit facing the surrounding screens on which crows seem to flutter mid-air, sweeping through the space.

Stepping away from the Owsley Stanley visuals of many of the installations, the Athletics Forest is an attempt by the curators to innovate a new type of “creative physical space.” The teamLab literature on “promoting the growth of the hippocampus of the brain” by training “spatial recognition ability” gives an idea of what they have in mind. The main “grounds” of the Athletics Forest lead off into the museum’s most interactive installations, with names like “"Inverted Globe, Giant Connecting Block Town" and "Weightless Forest of Resonating Life.”

The highly interactive installations of the Athletics Forest are a great showcase of the technology teamLabs has harnessed, and it’s also incredibly fun. A great example is “Light Forest Three-Dimensional Bouldering,” which was imagined as a “three-dimensional bouldering course.” Visitors are given a badge that glows with a pale light that responds to actions and postures while moving through the grove. If you have kids in tow, the Athletics Forest is a fine place to take refuge from the more intense installations, or it can be a rainy day afternoon destination by itself.

At En Tea House located within the museum, the high concept artistic work is united with a carefully selected menu of teas. The dining room of the tea house is its own installation called “Flowers Bloom in an Infinite Universe Inside a Teacup”: flowers dance on the surface of drinks and dance in unison with petals that sweep across the tabletop.

The teamLab museum is located under the convenient landmark of the Daikanransha, the ferris wheel at Palette Town; it's a short walk from the Tokyo Teleport Station on the Rinkai Line or Aomi Station on the Yurikamome Line. The popularity of teamLab Borderless means that it is often sold out. Although it’s possible to buy a ticket at the door, the best way to ensure a trouble-free visit is to purchase an e-ticket through the teamLab Borderless website.
