The beery, all-you-can-eat, all-you-can-drink free-for-all at the top of Mount Takao is a great reward for hiking all the way to the summit—or a decent reason to take the cable car up, if you’re in the neighborhood. Beer Mount also features some of the best views of Tokyo, especially on a clear day. If you’re lucky enough to arrive at the patio in the evening, the view of Tokyo by night, glowing like a crystal pool reflecting the stars, is even more impressive.

For a flat rate (3,800 yen for men, 3,600 for women), the bar and the buffet are open. Beer Mount operates from the middle of June to the middle of October, and, not unexpectedly, the place is slammed, especially during sunny weekends when Tokyoites escape the city and flock to the area. Even on busier weekends, it’s usually not impossible to get a spot, if you’re willing to wait.

The food is beer-garden grade, served buffet style at a few stations. If you’re hiking Takao’s trails, the buffet is a good place to carb up before heading out for more exploring, or an excuse to pack in some extra calories. The food selection calls to mind a Nevada border casino, ranging from onion rings and yakisoba to mapo tofu, pizza and sushi. The constant churn of diners means that most items are fresh out of the kitchen.

Whether or not the buffet appeals to you, the drink situation is more than covered. The grand nomihodai tradition is one of the most revered, celebrated in izakayas, clubs, karaoke joints and beer gardens in cities across this ethanol-fueled stratovolcanic archipelago. If you’re going to cut loose nomihodai-style, Beer Mount is one of the best places to do it—getting drunk on a mountain, that’s a no-brainer. No matter your tipple of choice, Beer Mount’s drink menu is extensive enough to please all but the pickiest.

A trip or two out to Takao is a summertime ritual for some Tokyoites. Whether you take the trails or hop on the cable car, you’re going to want to stop to appreciate the views. From Takao on a clear day, the vistas are spectacular, but when the sun starts going down, things get even more incredible. From one side of the patio, the surrounding mountains are particularly beautiful at sunset; from the other side, Beer Mount is the perfect place to see Tokyo and much of the Kanto Plain, lit up below you. Beer Mount closes at 9pm, and the last cable car goes down at 9:15pm, so make sure you time things right. When Beer Mount closes for the off-season in October, the beer garden is converted into a viewing platform, which you can visit for free.

Getting to Beer Mount is easy once you’re in the Takao area. It’s about a three-minute walk from the Platform of Life and Takaosan Station, right around the start of trail route #1. Getting there just ahead of sunset, on a clear day, guarantees the best views.
