Amami Oshima’s mellow vibe is conducive to taking it easy on the beach, enjoying the endless nature, and getting away from the bustling mood of the big city. A big part of a time well spent on the island is trying out the various cafe spread out from north to south, which, although there are not many, are unique and all offering both delicious treats and cool atmospheres to begin your day with a morning brew, recharge after a morning surf session, or unwind after a long day of adventure.

Located just a 15-minute walk from Amami Airport is the perfect spot on the island for serious coffee drinkers to get their caffeine fix soon after landing on the island. Yamada Coffee Amami is run by a friendly couple whose passion for coffee and design results in both great-tasting coffee brews and a beautiful minimal space that fits perfectly with the environment. The beans are roasted in house and include single origin beans from Brazil, Guatemala, Indonesia, Colombia, and Yamada’s very own Amami Blend. Surf x Cafe Green Hill
Surf x Cafe Green Hill
For surfers looking to recharge after the morning surf session, or simply those travelers looking for a hip yet unpretentious place where to hang out, Green Hill Cafe has the look, the feel, and the taste all down pat. This cool looking beach cafe is located steps away from Tebiro Beach and at the heart of SUP and surfing area of Amami Oshima. We love the decor, the music, and the refreshing treats on the menu, like the Aka Smoothie. For lunch or dinner, the menu leans heavily on Thai dishes, while also including pastas and the never disappointing taco rice dish, which is a favourite on the islands from Amami all the way down to Okinawa. And, if you appreciate one-stop shopping, Green Hill is also a surf shop and pension, so you pretty much don’t need to go anywhere else.

Hikari Coffee
Hikari Coffee
A hidden gem in the village of Uken is Hikari Coffee. As experiences go, this café is perfect if you want to engage in one-to-one conversation with the owner, unwind in a peaceful place, and, of course, enjoy delicious coffee. From the outside, Hikari Coffee might not look like a serious contender in terms of coffee, but the owner is actually as passionate about the bean as they come: so much so, that she’s actually the mastermind behind Amami’s only coffee farm. The coffee plants on the island are still too young to bear fruit, but that doesn’t stop the woman behind the bar from making a tasteful cup of coffee. The trek down to Uken is a long one, but Hikari Coffee makes it worth every kilometer.

Bee Lunch
Bee Lunch
Bee Lunch is the epitome of island cafes. It is one of those places that you stumble upon and you can’t help for thanking life for putting this beauty on the map. This chilled hangout is located right on Kuninao Beach, along the Sea of Japan Coast of Amami Oshima. At Bee Lunch, you’ll be chilling right on the beach and, if you’re open to it, interacting with the free-spirited locals who call this part of the island home. During the hot summer days, the kakigori does the trick to cool you down, while, in the evening, the instruments are up for grabs and usually lead to musical nights at sunset.
