Five Great Ways to Shop in Naha

Okinawa is about more than beaches and soba—check out these spots for retail therapy in the prefecture’s capital.

  • Whatever reputation Naha might have once had, its lowkey lifestyle has allowed for an interesting ecosystem of shops and cafes to develop. Although it’s impossible to sum up the city’s retail culture in a handful of shops, these should get you off to a good start.

Opened a few years back, Olden Times Clothing in Sakurazaka is a great place to start to get that Okinawa look. The shop hosts original designs, ranging from Hawaiian shirts to graphic tees and other, smaller pieces—many of which are inspired by Okinawan tropicalia, indigenous gear, and military surplus. If you’re headed for a night out in Sakurazaka, stop by Olden Times Clothing first and get Naha fresh.

Run by five enterprising women from Kyoto with expertise in tailoring, Fujisan Factory Store specializes in custom clothes, made with care but with a more casual vibe that most would not associate with tailor-made outfits. The shop itself is beautiful as the custom pieces it creates. A shirt starts at around the 10,000 yen mark, with the option to customize every aspect—quite reasonable, especially if measured against Tokyo prices.

In recent years, there’s been a renaissance in leatherwork in Naha, led by brass and leather-focused design label and brick-and-mortar boutique Brathess. Their shop in Matsuo, not far from Naha Kokusai-dori Shopping Street, creates handmade wallets, bags, and accessories made with carefully-sourced leather and accessorized with brass. But, consider stopping by Anshare also, where the owner of Brathess operates a select shop that functions as a clearinghouse for a dozen or so local artists—some working in leather and others in metal.

Jisakasu, near Makishi Market, is one of handful of antique stores in the neighborhood, with stock varying depending on what the owners can dig up. Jisakasu should be on your itinerary if you’re planning on a stroll in the Makishi Market area—so make sure to stop by. Also, one of the shop’s sidelines is mint oil, great for keeping away Okinawa’s insect life.

Garb Domingo is the best place in Naha to shop ceramics, glass, and other handicrafts from a selection of mostly Okinawa-based artisans and designers. Some examples of what’s on offer here are; glazed pottery in the traditional style by Osamu Makiya, hand-turned bowls by Ken Fujimoto, and the raw, brutal work of young potter Wakana Yara. Each piece is a unique creation touched by the hand of their creator, and often crafted mere miles from Garb Domingo.

If you’re in town for a short stretch, stop by Toncati for a unique gift to bring home. Saeko Takida is one of many Bohemian transplants that created the chill vibe and comfortable climate of Naha. The concept at Toncati is to turn scrap wood into works of art—each piece is unique in both form and material. Take home a piece of Naha!
