The Photographer’s Guide to Akihabara’s Camera Shops

Now known for its maid cafes and otaku culture, Akihabara should not be forgotten for its original moniker of “Electricity Town.” Originally dubbed in the 1930s, Akihabara was the first town to sell such Western technology as washing machines. Akihabara is still the place to find discounted and unique electronics. Japan’s most popular electronic, cameras, are sold in abundance in the city. Whether film and vintage or digital and expensive, Akihabara is the place to go for a variety of cameras, both used and new.

The flagship location of the popular electronics store is located in the heart of Akihabara. Yodobashi sells everything electronics-related, with the addition of restaurants and anime goods in the Akiba location. There are nine floors that offer not just photography equipment but also sporting goods, computers, children’s toys, and entertainment. The eighth floor houses 30 restaurants, covering different kinds of cuisine and the ninth floor has a batting cage and golf range. Equipment can be rented there, which makes a fun afternoon for families tagging along on photography shopping trips. While there is something for everyone’s different hobbies in Yodobashi, photography is still the main driving force of the store. Everything sold is new and the latest edition. Sample cameras are on display, so interested patrons can tangibly feel how the camera works before purchasing. Yodobashi is also good for accessories and equipment for both the amateur and professional photographer. Lines of tripods and assortments of camera bags fill hallways. Yodobashi is the perfect place for everyone to be entertained.
